Biography

Dr Raphaël Bize graduated in medicine from the University of Geneva in 1997 and obtained his doctorate in medicine from the University of Lausanne (UNIL) in 2005. He also holds two FMH specialist titles, in General Internal Medicine (2003) and in Prevention and Public Health (2006). As a research associate at the Centre for Health Promotion Studies of the University of Alberta (Canada) in 2005 and 2006, he completed a Master of Public Health (MPH). In 2019, Dr Bize obtained a CAS in Public Policy Evaluation from IDHEAP (UNIL).

Before joining Unisanté (University Center for Primary Care and Public Health, Lausanne), he worked successively at the Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine (IUMSP) in Lausanne, at the Lausanne university medical outpatient clinic (Policlinique médicale universitaire), at the Alcohol Treatment Unit and the Stop Tabac smoking cessation clinic of Lausanne University Hospital (CHUV), at the Physical Activity and Health Unit of the Swiss Federal Office of Sport in Magglingen, and at the Ligues de la santé of the Canton of Vaud.

He led the development of a training programme in physical activity counselling for physicians and the drafting of the accompanying materials (www.paprica.ch); this training has since been translated into German and integrated into the PEPra national programme. 

Dr Bize has been actively involved in behavioural surveillance activities relating to HIV and other sexually transmitted infections at the national level. 

He teaches and conducts extensive research on the health of LGBTIQ+ people. He leads the development of the I-CARE online training programme (Improving Care and Access for Rainbow Equity), designed for primary care physicians and other health professionals. He is also the principal investigator of the EFFICARE study, funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation under NRP 83 “Gender Medicine and Health” (2025–2029), which evaluates the effectiveness of the I-CARE programme and the conditions for its implementation in practice. 

Dr Bize is a former member of the Federal Commission for Sexual Health and of the expert commission of the Tobacco Prevention Fund. He is a senior physician (médecin associé) at Unisanté, where he has headed the Public Health Evaluation and Expertise Unit (CEESAN) since 2019; working within a multidisciplinary team, the unit combines research, evaluation mandates for the federal and cantonal health authorities, surveillance and training. He is also a Privat-docent and Senior Lecturer (MER clinique) at the Faculty of Biology and Medicine (UNIL). 

His work in support of health equity was recognised with the 2025 FBM Equality Award.
