MARTI Joachim
Co-Head of the Health Economics and Policy Sector
Biography
An economist by training, Joachim Marti is Associate Professor of Health Economics at the University of Lausanne and Co-Head of the Health Economics and Policy Sector at Unisanté. He is also Co-Chair of the Lausanne Centre for Health Economics, Behavior, and Policy.
After completing a PhD in Economics at the University of Neuchâtel, complemented by postgraduate training in statistics and health economics, he pursued his academic career at Yale University, the University of Leeds, and Imperial College London before joining the University of Lausanne and Unisanté in 2017.
His research lies at the intersection of health economics, health policy, and health services research, examining how healthcare systems can improve population health while delivering greater value and promoting equity. A central focus is the evaluation of health system reforms, clinical interventions, and social and health policies, with particular attention to their effects on healthcare utilisation, costs, health outcomes, inequalities, and system performance. His work combines economic evaluation, causal inference, behavioural and stated-preference methods, and the analysis of large-scale real-world and administrative data.
Current areas of interest include the organisation and financing of healthcare, low-value care and financial incentives, equity and access to care, patient pathways, and behavioural approaches to health and healthcare. He leads and contributes to interdisciplinary research programmes bringing together clinicians, epidemiologists, economists, behavioural scientists, and policymakers, with extensive collaborations across academic and public-sector institutions in Switzerland and internationally.
Alongside his research, Joachim Marti is engaged in academic leadership, teaching, and researcher development. He co-chairs the SSPH+ Inter-university Graduate Campus, supporting doctoral training across Swiss universities, and teaches healthcare organisation and financing, economic evaluation, and related topics at undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral, and executive levels. He also supervises doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers.
His work contributes directly to public decision-making through commissioned research and policy evaluations for Swiss cantonal and federal authorities and international organisations. These activities complement his investigator-led research and help strengthen the links between rigorous economic analysis, clinical and public health practice, and evidence-informed health policy.
