SCHWARZ Joëlle
Senior Researcher
Co-Head of the Health and Gender Unit, Department of Ambulatory Care

Biography
As a researcher at Unisanté since 2017, I lead teaching and research projects on gender in health. I co-head the Health and Gender Unit with Prof Carole Clair, and we lead a team that works to promote and implement multidisciplinary approaches.
I am trained in social sciences and epidemiology. My two research domains are social epidemiology and medical sociology. In social epidemiology, I conduct quantitative research projects on gender-related health disparities. In medical sociology, I use qualitative methods to understand how gender shapes clinical practice and medical training. I teach these thrilling subjects at the Lausanne School of Medicine and elsewhere.
I conducted my doctoral research at the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH/University of Basel) on the topic of family planning policies and practices in Burundi. Prior to that, I worked at Swiss TPH in Switzerland and abroad on international cooperation projects in the field of health.
